Hospitality and Restaurant Management
Hospitality is the world’s largest industry, grossing more
the $3.8 trillion per year. It provides 10% of the world’s
gross national product and employs 10% of the world’s work
force. It is the fastest growing industry in the world and is open
to people of varied talents and skill levels; in addition, a career
in hospitality is one of the most fun careers in the business field.
The one thing that is common to all areas of the industry is the
need for educated managers. In the past, people worked their
way up to management positions in the hospitality industry; today,
formal education is a necessity.
Career Outlook
A degree in hospitality is a degree in business. This opens up
wonderful jobs not only in the hospitality industry, but also
in related fields such as public relations and marketing. New
concepts in the hospitality field are developed constantly, each
one of them bringing new job opportunities.
Earnings of hospitality professionals vary greatly according to
position and the type and size of the business. Based on
a survey conducted by the National Restaurant Association, USA,
management salaries range between $30,000 and $50,000, plus bonuses.
Salaries for corporate positions can exceed those figures.
In addition to great salaries, you may have the opportunity to
work in exciting tourist destinations with travel benefits and
other perks. Resorts and casinos provide stimulating career opportunities
in fast-paced environments. Positions with cruise lines and airlines
can provide the opportunity to travel the world.
Personal Qualities
Jobs within the hospitality industry are varied enough that individuals
of all skill levels and personality types will find challenging
career opportunities. Most employers prefer some post-secondary
education and experience is a definite asset. Both two and four
year degrees are available in Hospitality Management. All managers
must be able to use computers. As in any position where the work
is directly related to the public, managers need strong interpersonal
skills and the ability to get along well with people, Managers
should also have good leadership and organizational skills, with
the ability to pay attention to detail.
